Major changes occurred to London Country services in the Grays area on 3rd April 1976.
Routes 329, 357, 370A, 371A and 371B were withdrawn (London Country had a policy of eliminating suffix letters from route
numbers at this time) and new routes 324 & 399 were introduced. Route 323 replaced all of route 370’s journeys to Chadwell St
Mary, new route 324 replaced route 370A and the 399 served roads which had never had a bus service.
Route 399 had two loops and was billed as a ‘town service’; the ‘Northern loop’ ran from Derby Road and went via Hathaway
Road, Lenthall Avenue, Hogg Lane, Crammavill Street, Long Lane, Laird Avenue, Rectory Road and back to Derby Road. The
‘Southern loop’ ran from Derby Road via Bridge Road, Argent Street and back to Derby Road. The ‘Southern loop’ was poorly
used and was withdrawn after seven months, being replaced by a second Northern loop from Derby Road to Stifford Clays via
Little Thurrock.

1977 saw London Country route 370 loose it’s crew operated Routemasters, in favour of a completely new type of vehicle to
London Country; the Bristol VRT. London Country bought fifteen of them (registered PPH461R to PPH475R) and allocated
them all to Grays garage. Because London Country decided to standardise on Leyland Atlanteans for it’s double deck requirements,
and the difficulties of maintaining such a small fleet, the VRT’s were sold to the Bristol bus company after just three years (click
here to see the 1980 entry recording this).

1st July 1978 saw the introduction of route 396, which replaced route 399 between Grays and Stifford Clays via Little Thurrock -
the Grays to Stifford Clays via Lenthall Avenue section remained as the 399.

Towards the end of 1978, London Country introduced the ‘Thurrock Travelwide’ ticket.

	As can be seen in the table below, London Country made major changes to it’s services on 1st September 1979 - main change being that all the 32x routes were withdrawn and replaced by new routes numbered in the 37x series.
