Capital CityBus was born in 1990 when Ensign sold it’s network of routes, most of which were London Buses contracts, to Citybus of China.
Within Thurrock, Capital Citybus made many changes, but the core routes 323 and 348 operated almost unchanged throughout their period of time under Capital’s ownership. Other variants, such as the 324, 347 and 349 came along as the network grew and Capital also joined with fellow Thurrock operator Thameside on route 510 before taking over the whole route as it’s own.
In 1998, Capital Citybus was acquired by First group and thus became part of First London, though it retained the Capital Citybus name on the vehicles.
The writing was on the wall for Capital’s operations in Thurrock when they won the contract for central London route 25 and the drivers & garage space were needed. In February 1999, Route 324 was handed over to Ensign Bus and the 348 went to fellow First owned company Eastern National before also moving on to Ensign - the original operator of the routes before Capital Citybus!!
