Taxis in Thurrock are provided by private operators using normal everyday saloon cars and in some cases, minibuses. All taxis, taxi companies, and their drivers are licenced by Thurrock Council and fall into two distinct types of services:
Hackney Carriage are the type that can be hailed in the street or found parked on designated taxi ranks. They can be identified by yellow stickers on the sides which show the Thurrock Council logo and state that the taxi can ply for hire - there will also be a yellow plate on the back which shows the vehicle registration number, the vehicle licence number, the date it is valid to as well as a basic description of the vehicle. Hackney carriage vehicles also display an illuminated ‘TAXI’ sign on the roof to indicate if it is available for hire.
Private Hire are the type that must be pre-booked and cannot be hailed on the street or found on a taxi rank. They can be identified by Green stickers on the sides (see below) which show the Thurrock Council logo and state that the taxi must be pre-booked - there will also be a Green plate on the back which shows the vehicle registration number, the vehicle licence number, the date it is valid to as well as a basic description of the vehicle.
Generally, either type of taxi is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; most companies do offer this service but it’s best to ring them and check if you wish to use a specific firm.
